Primitivo is a clone of Zinfandel which exhibits smaller berries on a loose cluster. This creates a more intense flavor and tannin and allows the grapes to ripen more evenly than classic Zinfandels. Our 2019 Primitivo exhibits classic aromas of strawberry, cherry, and red berries, with toasty notes of oak, allspice, and vanilla. The palate is full, with balanced vibrant acidity and beautifully rich and smooth tannin that lingers throughout with a rich, opulent finish.
The 2019 Primitivo was sourced from Williams Vineyard in Contra Costa. An old vineyard planted to heritage Primitivo from Italy it has very free-draining white sandy soils close to the delta where the breeze moderates disease and temperature whilst the reflective heat from the sand helps ripen the Primitivo evenly. Pruned to the classic medusa head style these grapes get dappled sunlight for plush tannins.
Grapes are hand-harvested at first light and bought to the winery where we gently destem and transfer to a closed top tank. Fermentation occurs naturally and temperature peaks at 85F over the 10-day fermentation process where it is pumped over twice a day and aerated during the peak of fermentation. The wine is then pressed off the skins and undergoes malolactic fermentation before being transferred to barrels for aging. The wine receives 30% new FrenchM+ oak for 15 months before being blended and bottled.
