Our Late Harvest Aleatico is an amazing dessert wine that is more port-like in style with plenty of sweetness, richness, and acidity to balance the array of floral and dried fruit characters and support wonderful spice and aromatics from the oak. A wonderful wine to be shared.
The Aleatico grapes used for this wine come from the rich soils of the Serres Ranch located in the heart of Sonoma Valley. Here the soils are old riverbed with traces of rhyolite upon a clay loam base. Early fog and hot days provide slow ripening and Vineyard owner John Serres allows the grapes to be slightly shaded to bring out the floral character and allow the bunches to fully ripen before slightly dehydrating to create this exquisite late harvest red wine.
Picked very late in the season at nearly 32% sugar, these grapes were destemmed and crushed before being must pumped to a fermenter to extract all the juice from this dehydrated fruit. It was pumped over multiple times a day whilst it slowly yet surely naturally fermented away. We pressed after two weeks on skins and it kept on slowly fermenting until it reached its natural balance in this wine. It underwent a partial natural malolactic fermentation and was stored in barrels for two years before bottling with 40% new French oak adding lovely spice characters.
